The smartphone became part of our life relatively a few years ago, it was 2007 when Steve Jobs announced the world’s first iPhone, and from that moment, everyday life and human productivity have never been the same.
The mobile phone has put all possible and imaginable information at our fingertips, making it available at any time of the day. This great revolution has led not only to an improvement for our work, being able to work anywhere and at any time, but it has given us the possibility to always remain in communication with each other even hundreds of kilometres away. However, these great comforts bring with them a price to pay: the time we spend with our smartphone has significantly increased over the years, as shown by several studies and statistics, reaching the point of an almost addictive relationship with our electronic devices.
Imagine a week without your smartphone, would you be able to survive?

How do we use our smartphone?
The cervical tract of our spine is the area that allows us more movement in every direction. The head in fact has the possibility of rotating, flexing, extending and flex to the side with wide degrees of freedom, thanks to the particular conformation of the cervical rachis.

This great mobility is kept under control by a complicated network of muscles and ligaments that give stability to the neck on every level. Several studies and researches argue that for each degree of forward flexion of the head, a stress of considerable importance is created at the level of the articular facets of the cervical vertebrae. Just think that an inclination of a few degrees can weigh up to 30 kilos on the vertebrae and in the long run the delicate biomechanical and muscular balance can be altered.
Looking at the smartphone for long periods of time while keeping the gaze downwards is a significant incentive that stresses this area.
So how do you use your smartphone? Are you keeping your head downwards while reading this article?

Text Neck Syndrome
In 2012, an American chiropractor noticed that more and more people entering his studio complained of severe neck pain and he wondered the reason this annoying problem.
He noticed that in the waiting room his clients were hunched over the screens of their mobile phones, so he linked this “Hi-Tech” posture to the onset of symptoms reported by his clients. By staying several hours a day with the smartphone in their hand, people over-stimulate the head support muscles which are forced to remain over-stretched and in contraction to keep the head in anterior flexion.
This leads over time to pain in the neck and often also in the shoulders and arms, and headaches of muscle-tension origin; masticatory and respiratory problems are also not uncommon, as shown by numerous studies on the subject. This posture with the head leaning forward is becoming more and more frequent among the world population: just look around, paying attention to this detail.
It is called the posture of the twenty-first century; the text neck syndrome affects not only adults but above all the children of the new technological generations. In fact, the latter are used to handle any electronic device from an early age and risk irreparable damage as their skeleton grows depending on the incorrect use of the smartphone.

Does a correct movement help to solve the problem?
Living practically in symbiosis with our smartphone, it becomes essential to understand and learn the correct way to use it. Awareness of how the body is positioned while looking at the mobile phone screen is of fundamental importance to preserve our vertebral joints from inflammation and premature degeneration.
Training all the muscles of our trunk to maintain an upright position, that is, with the head above the shoulders, even while using electronic devices on the move, can solve many problems described above in the text neck syndrome. The most important part of the process is therefore certainly the awareness of having and keeping the mobile phone in an incorrect position for long periods of time, which leads to fatigue of the muscles of our neck very quickly.
Subsequently it is necessary to understand and perceive how our body moves in space in order to maintain a correct posture even holding and looking at the smartphone. The overload of the muscles in this way will be less burdensome and your health will benefit from this. The correct movement turns out to be the winning approach for this type of problem: if you move correctly and pay attention to what you do and how you are doing during the day, everything will be to your advantage.
